WIP 06/27/17 Woodland Themed Afghan – Canoe Silhouette Applique

These are so fun! And not complicated to come up with…. I could probably make a whole afghan with all different recreational silhouettes, although it may be a tad boring being all black and white. What do you think? LOL


Crochet Canoe Silhouette Applique

Measures approximately 4” tall by 5” wide.



  • medium worsted weight yarn (4)

15 yards – Red Heart Super Saver in Black

  • Crochet hook size G (4.0 mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Stitch Abbreviations (Pattern is in standard American terms)

  • st – stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • RS – right side
  • MR – magic ring
  • Rnd – round



Row 1: Ch 16, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in same, sc 13, {dc, sc} in same, ch 1, turn (17)

Row 2: Sc in same, sc in next, {2 dc, sl st} 6 times, 2 dc in next, sc 2 (24). Fasten off, weave in ends.



Row 1: With RS facing and ‘wavy’ part canoe piece on the bottom – Fold canoe in half, find middle st and attach yarn 1 st to the right. Sc in same, hdc, dc, ch 2, turn (3)

Row 2: Hdc in same, hdc, sc, do not turn. Ch 5, turn (8)

Row 3: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st across (7) Fasten off, leave a long tail for attaching to granny square.



Rnd 1: MR, sc 5 into ring, join to 1st sc and fasten off, leave a long tail.



Row 1: Ch 20, sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc, {dc 2, sc 2} 4 times. Fasten off, leave a long tail.



Position pieces on your granny square. Using your needle – attach waves first, then canoe/body above that, then head.
