WIP 07/12/17 Woodland Themed Afghan – Wildflower & Bee Applique

Yay! Finally another applique finished. It might not be the most original concept… a flower and a bee… but I’ve been enjoying the challenge of seeing if I’m capable of turning my ideas into reality! πŸ™‚ Β Just a handful more to go and I can finally join all these squares together.

Here is my latest:

Crochet Wildflower & Bee Applique

Measures approximately 6” tall by 6” wide.

Supplies

  • Medium worsted weight yarn (4)

11 yards – Caron Simply Soft in Pistachio

8 yards – Caron Simply Soft in Grape

4 yards – Caron Simply Soft in Super Duper Yellow

4 yards – Caron Simply Soft in Black

3 yards – Caron Simply Soft in White

  • Crochet hook size G (4.0 mm)
  • Crochet hook size D (3.25 mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Stitch Abbreviations (Pattern is in standard American terms)

  • st – stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tc – triple crochet
  • sc2tog – single crochet 2 together
  • MR – magic ring
  • Rnd – round

 

FLOWER

Use D Hook

Rnd 1: With Yellow – MR, 10 sc in ring. Drop yellow yarn (can cut it, leave a couple-inch tail), join Grape yarn into the beginning sc

Rnd 2: Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 5, skip 1 (on MR), sl st (6)

Rnd 3, 4, 5: Repeat Rnd 2

Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 2. Your last sl st should be in same st where you joined Grape yarn.

Rnd 7: Sc, hdc, dc 2, hdc, 2 sc in same (this should be in the tip), continue working around to other side of petal and hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc, sl st into next.

Rnd 8, 9, 10: Repeat Rnd 7

Rnd 11: Repeat Rnd 7. Fasten off after last sl st. Leave a long tail for attaching flower to granny square.

 

Tie off your yellow ends and the short purple end.

 

MAIN STEM

Use D Hook

Row 1: Holding 2 strands of Pistachio yarn, ch 20, fasten off. Leave long tail.

 

BIG LEAF

Use D Hook

Rnd 1: With Pistachio – Ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, hdc, dc 3, tc 2, hdc. Leave last 4 stitches unworked. (Last 4 st will be the stem). Turn piece clockwise, work over the chains and hdc into the back side of the same stitch. (Refer to picture below)

Working down the back side: tc 2, dc 3, hdc 2, sc 2. Now ch 2 (should be at tip), sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sl st to finish off. Leave a long tail to fasten leaf to granny square.

 

SMALL LEAF

Use D Hook

Rnd 1: Ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc 2, tc, hdc in last. Turn piece clockwise, work over the chains as you did for Big Leaf and hdc into the back side of the same stitch, tc, dc 2, hdc, sc 2, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st to finish off. Leave a long tail.

 

BEE

Use F Hook for bee and all it’s components

Row 1: With Yellow – Ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 2: 2 sc in same, 2 sc in last. Drop yellow (do not cut), pick up black, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 3: Working over your dropped yellow yarn, sc in same, sc 3. Drop black (do not cut), pick up yellow, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 4: Working over your dropped black yarn, sc in same, sc 3. Use both strands of yarn and ch 1, then drop black (4)

Row 5: Working over your dropped black yarn, sc in same, sc 3. Drop yellow, pick up black, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 6: Working over your dropped yellow yarn, sc in same, sc 3. Drop black, pick up yellow, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 7: Working over your dropped black yarn, sc in same, sc 3. Drop black (done with black now), pick up yellow, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 8: Sc2tog twice, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 9: Sc2tog. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Using a scrap amount of black, sew on a mouth and eye on the right side of bee body.

STINGER

Attach black yarn to left end of bee. Sc in same, ch 3, turn, sl st into 2nd ch from hook, sl st, now sl st to beginning sc.

Fasten off, leave a long tail.

WINGS

With white yarn – Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 2, 2 sc in last. Turn piece clockwise and continue down back side. Hdc 2, sc, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 2, 2 sc in last. Turn piece clockwise and continue, hdc 2, sc. Fasten off, leave long tail.

Attach wings to bee as shown below. Weave in ends. (Wings are not sewn down onto granny square).

Arrange the flower, stem, leaves and bee on your granny square. If you wish, you can temporarily secure pieces with safety pins. Use long yarn tails to attach each piece.
