I am excited to be so close to being able to join all my granny squares together and get this thing DONE!! I wanted to get it finished before my big trip across state to see my mom in a few days but I don’t think that will happen. I’m not going to beat myself up over being so slow on this afghan though…. I only started making my own applique patterns 6 months ago when I started this project, so I have an excuse. LOL 🙂
Anyways, my latest applique is this awesome owl! Most of the appliques I’ve seen for owls have the owl just facing forward. I, of course, wanted to do something a little different and made him kinda sideways. Hope you like him!

Rnd – round
Use G Hook and Taupe yarn
Rnd 1: Form a MR, sc 10 into ring, sl st to 1st sc (10)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in same, 2 sc in each st around, sl st to 1st sc (20)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same, (sc, dc) in next, dc, 2 hdc in next, hdc, 2 sc in next, sc, 2 sc in next, sc, 2 sc in next, dc, 2 dc in next, dc, 2 dc in next, ch 1, turn (21) **You will be leaving the last 6 stitches unworked.
Rnd 4: Sl st in next, sc, hdc, dc, ch 1, turn (4)

Rnd 5: Sl st in next, sl st 2, ch 3, do not turn: continue and sc in next open space on round (see image below), . . .

Rnd 6: Sl st in next, sl st, ch 1, turn (2)
Rnd 7: 2 hdc in same (mark the first hdc), hdc 6, 2 hdc in next, ch 1, turn (10)
Rnd 8: 2 hdc in same (mark the first hdc), hdc 8, 2 hdc in last (the marked st), ch 1, turn (12)
Rnd 9: Sc3tog (mark st), sc 6, sc3tog, ch 3, turn (8)
Rnd 10: Sc into 2nd ch from hook, skip next ch and (hdc, sc) in same (in the sc3tog st from previous rnd), sc 2, sl st 2, sc 2, (sc, hdc) in last. (11)
Fasten off, leave a long tail for attaching owl to granny square.
Use E Hook and Heather yarn
Rnd 1: MR, 6 sc into ring, sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off, leave long tail.
Using Black yarn and a tapestry needle – stitch a pupil onto the eye.
Using White yarn and a tapestry needle – stitch a ‘light reflection’ onto pupil.
Sew eyes onto head.
Using Mustard yarn and a tapestry needle – stitch on a beak.
Use E Hook and Soft Taupe
Rnd 1: MR, sc 10 in ring, sl st to 1st sc to join, ch 2, turn
Rnd 2: Dc in same, dc, ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, ch 1, 2 dc around post of the 2nd dc of this rnd, sc in 2nd open st on round, sl st 6.
Fasten off, leave a long tail and sew wing onto body.
With Heather yarn and a tapestry needle – make a few ‘V’ stitches on belly.
Use E Hook and Mustard
Step 1: With piece upside down and RS facing, find two middle stitches along the bottom of the body. Attach yarn in the right, middle stitch and ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st to where you attached yarn.
Step 2: Sl st in next, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st in the beginning sl st from this step. Fasten off, leave long tail.
Using long tail ends, attach owl to granny square.
Finished Owl Applique measures approximately 4.25” tall by 3” wide.
